Examples: Le doy el libro (to whom? to him - I give him the book); les compro una mochila nueva (to whom? to them - I buy them a new backpack). We use the Direct Object Pronouns to answer the questions "what?" or "whom?" with regard to what the subject of the sentence is doing. Capítulo 4 - ¿Cómo estás? ¿Cómo está? ¿Cómo están?

This quarter you will learn more adjectives. Please check pages 144 and 145 to review the vocabulary you need to know for the Quiz (2/19/15) and the Test (2/25/15). Adjectives like: abierto, cerrado, cansado, contento, apurado, nervioso, triste, limpio, sucio, loco, frío, caliente, ocupado, libre, enfermo and others (check the PowerPoint in Edmodo). Also check the G&V page 46 (in Edmodo or click link) and Workbook pages 67 and 69.

You need to remember how adjectives change with gender and number, and how you can use them with the Verbs ESTAR and SER (mostly verbo Estar on this chapter). You use the Verbo Estar when talking about feelings, conditions, weather, things happening in the present moment; you use the Verbo Ser to indicate the characteristics and personality of someone (Él es muy inteligente; Ella es bella), telling time, origins of a person (Pedro es de Puerto Rico), etc.

Review these verbs:

Estar: estoy  estás  está  estamos  estáis  están

Ser:  soy  eres  es  somos  sois  son

VERBO GUSTAR (simple rules)

So you already now that to use the verbo gustar you use the IOPs (Indirect Object Pronouns - ME TE LE NOS OS LES) with either the word GUSTA or the word GUSTAN. You use the word GUSTA with singular nouns or an infinitive (basic form of a verb; i.e. comer, comprar, hablar, etc.). Examples: Me gusta el pollo; Me gusta cantar. You use the word GUSTAN only with plural nouns. Examples: Me gustan los conciertos de "One Direction;" Me gustan los tacos de "Las Margaritas."

ATENCIÓN: Even when your have an infinitive with a plural noun, like ir de compras, or ir a las tiendas, or ir a los restaurantes, or comprar muchos libros, you MUST use GUSTA, instead of GUSTAN, because you have an infinitive before the plural noun (and an infinite can only go after GUSTA)? ¿Comprendes?
You should be able to understand the Diálogo on page 146 (LIBRO) and answer questions from exercises No. 21, 22 and 23. Read the "Estructura" on page 148 and work on exercises No. 25, 26, 27 (pages 148 and 149). Read the "Cultura Viva" on page 147 and write your name as you would be called in a Latin American country. Start working on the vocab on pages 154 & 155 (it will be included on the Test of 2/25/15). The Test will also include whatever we cover on Friday (2/20), Monday (2/23) and Tuesday (2/24), like the VERBO GUSTAR (to like), and how to use it properly.
